RETURN OF THE RENTALS

Uhhh...Happy New Year everybody!

Where have I been? More on that in a bit.

First off, Kitty Balboa over at the always entertaining and illuminating What the HELL What's Up VANDERVOORTS (I'd add you to my blogroll if I knew how, Kitty!) wants to know if I was at "one of their best" shows. Kitty, do you think someone with the sort of whuffie (look it up) that I have would be slacking off? No way.

I mean seriously, where were you back in 2003? I was making freaking Vandervoorts AIM Buddy Icons!

So yeah, I was at the "Jerk House" show, and by "Jerk House" I mean some brownstone in Brooklyn filled with spoiled little hippies who can afford the Metro-North down from Westchester but can't scrape together enough change from between the cushions of their parent's spare leather sofa to buy a stick of deoderant.

But let me say this--those spoiled little hippies know a thing or two about throwing a rock and roll show! And what they don't know the Vandervoorts broke down and taught them. My grandfather used to say that if he gave me a fish we would eat for dinner, but if he taught me to fish then I could eat fish pretty much whenever I wanted as long as I was near a lake or stream (this was before Thomas Edison had invented the grocery store). Well the Vandervoorts are like my grandfather of the rock and roll movement. I'll explain. Let's say REM were still alive and they were doing a show next week. Millions of people would go, and they'd rock out and have a pretty good time. But the next day? Nothing. "Get back to work. Don't eat hamburgers medium-rare. Floss before you go to bed. Pay your child support." And so on. You know how it is with life, people! Not the Vandervoorts. They come to town and they don't just rock your children, they teach your children how to rock.

So anyway, back to "Jerk House," if we're talking about the Vandervoorts taking kids to school, then this was sort of the AP class. Kids weren't just learning theories, they learning the how and the why behind the theory. There was even that irritating kid who asks too many questions and then argues with the teacher about every multiple choice question he missed on the test. And the one jock who's smart enough to be in AP, he was there too. Who wasn't there? ALL THE POPULAR KIDS.

Okay, enough of my babbling. It was a very good show and the Vandervoorts should be proud of it, but I've been busy lately and didn't have time to comment on it. Busy doing what, you ask? Of course. Early this year it came to my attention that there is a video in existence of what my source called "the proto-Vandervoorts." After a great deal discussion and negotation, I can finally report to you that I have secured the GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS for this piece of video. And of course I'm happy to share it with you here, now.

The details are tantilizingly specific yet maddingly vague. It dates from October 27, 2002, and a small piece of tape indicates the location as "Thames St, Brooklyn NY." The quality is atrocious, and each clip is no longer than about twenty seconds. My source claims this is because it was recorded with an early digital camera that needed to be cranked every twenty seconds to restore its power. I was skeptical but he showed me a page on the Wikipedia where just such a device is described.

We can see three of the current Vandervoorts, but Emma Vandervoort is replaced by a tall gentleman in a captain's hat. Late in the clip you'll hear him mumble out the theme to Diff'rent Strokes. The Vandervoorts have come a long way, but they also started quite a ways back.

I hope you enjoyed the film, I paid a lot of money for it.

It is the only major subway line in New York that does not enter Manhattan. Its route is short: 16 stations at peak hours. Its trains, 4 cars instead of the usual 8 or 10, seem oddly truncated. Even the color of its route symbol, a sickly lime green, suggests unease.

It's the G line, which rumbles between Queens and Brooklyn, and has never been much loved by subway riders. It does not have the multiethnic charm of the No. 7, the iPod-hipster bustle of the L, the quaint charm of the 42nd Street shuttle or the romance of the A. It has not been immortalized in song.

MYRTLE WILLOUGHBY MINE?

A few posts ago I said that our favorite band had booked two shows. Well since then they played one (rock!) and canceled the other (sad!). But subsequent to all that they have another one lined up, this time with the fine gentlemen of Paper Fleet! And also The Ottomen.

So that's all really good news and .... oh yeah the show is at the Cake Shop place right downtown in little old New York City. Tell 'em the internet sent 'ya.

Finally I just want to point out the title of this post, which I think would be an awesome title for a Vandervoorts song. It came to me while riding the subway the other day and now I can't get it out of my head. But there's a little part of my brain that thinks I'm ripping the idea off someone else (probably a Vandervoort). No matter who came up with it, I think it's a song filled with more potential energy than Rosanne at the top of the Empire State Building, and I look forward to hearing it ASAP.

If you're lucky I'll do a special Thanksgiving post for all my American readers, if not then I'll see you at the Cake Shop on MONDAY DECEMBER 5TH AT 9PM.

WHAT THE HELL IS UP ANYMORE ANYWAY?

I poke and I prod but there is no news of an upcoming Vandervoorts show. I hear things from time to time and I suggest things now and then but nothing has borne fruit yet. I thought they were close to doing an awesome show on a beach volleyball court in Queens with a fantastic view of the United Nations, but nothing came of it.

I was at a bar with a couple of the Vandervoorts the other night (yeah it's no big deal to me, they are almost like normal people now). We were sitting outside and a dog took a dump on the patio and then a rat ran by. Two bad events like that normally would give me some depression, but the Vandervoorts presence kept my spirits up, a least for a little while.

Anyway, here is a link to a site on the internet that hasn't been updated in a long time, but it's nice to know that it's still there. This is the link I just referred to.

WHEN I SAID "CALL THE SHERIFF" I REALLY MEANT "CALL THE F-ING POLICE"

Well that was weird.

1. Collymore. What is this place? A laundromat? A coffeeshop? A bar? Proving ground for MC Frontalot? A little bit of all of these apparently. I must say the place grew on me over the course of the evening, except for...

2. ...that strange incident right before the Vandervoorts went on where some guy with a hammer ran through the door and told us all to "call the f-ing police!" He was being chased by a guy with a block of wood. Carpentry project gone awry? Unlikely. In any event it seems that the f-ing police were called and dispatched the situation, meanwhile, back inside...

3. ...the Vandervoorts put on a great show, they sounded good, there were a lot of people (why don't any of you dance?!) and the overall vibe was just way positive. They wrapped it up with Zombie Kitty, which they said is their "novelty song" but we all know that "Skater Boy" (I'll be damned if I'm going to go look up the correct spelling right now) is their real novelty song. That trance that Yung-En Vandervoort goes into during Zombie Kitty is freaking awesome / scary.

There were a lot of people at the show, a big hello to all my new friends.

TYPING

DAMN was that show at 169 really a whole month ago? Looks like I'm asleep at the blog again. Let's get caught up.

SHOW RECAP: Clermont Taylor, Cats Paw, and Plowing Mud Forever. Yeah, these guys were awesome. Let me make it clear that I don't speak for the Vandervoorts, I met one of them once* for like two minutes standing in line at an ice cream trucked parked outside CBGB's back in the '70s. So when I say something like "Plowing Mud Forever was awesome" that's just my opinion, maybe the Vandervoorts disagree and think those bands sucked. Deep in my heart I know that the Vandervoorts respect every band they share the stage with, but do they like all those bands also? Probably not.

HAVING SAID THAT: Cats Paw was particularly terrible, IIRC.

OKAY, SORRY, I didn't start this blog to say mean things about other bands. I started it to say mean things about the Vandervoorts. So.... what to say? Oh yeah, have you noticed that all the Vandervoorts wear the same sneakers? Sauconys! It's like they think they are Weezer or something! I tried on a pair of Sauconys once, and they didn't provide the level of support that I look for in a sneaker. Leave it to the Vandervoorts to choose a substandard sneaker as the "official sneaker of our band."

ANCHORS AWEIGH: Paper Fleet was a good time, and it turns out these are some pretty stand up fellows as well. There are negotiations underway for the Vandervoorts and Paper Fleet to reunite and play together somewhere, sometime, TBD. More on this to follow, for sure.

(New York - Albacore Records) Albacore Records announced today that it has signed The Vandervoorts to a multi-record deal, and will release their self-titled major label debut on August 2. The album marks the band's first studio collaboration with producers Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo (The Neptunes), who have worked with breakout stars Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg, Nelly, Kelis, and others on numerous multi-platinum albums.

According to Albacore Records Chairman R. Frosted, "The Vandervoorts are simply one of the most distinctive and exciting artists of our time, and this album is a remarkable addition to our catalog. The album is filled with amazing songs and performances that evoke the future without ever looking backward, and I think it's an album that audiences worldwide will find ruthlessly sublime. Music needs The Vandervoorts right now, and we couldn't be more proud that they have chosen Albacore Records as their home."

Regarding their signing to Albacore Records, The Vandervoorts released this statement, "We can't think of a better home for the music that we make than Albacore. ACTUAL VANDERVOORTS NEWS -- I'M DOING MY JOB

The Vandervoorts are starting to cook again, and I'm here to serve you two generous helpings of news.

The Vandervoorts went "into the studio" for a much anticipated Presdients' Day Eve recording session. They put five songs down, including "B61." After another shift at the four-track they should have about ten songs ready. The word from inside the band is that the recordings sound awesome -- ushering in a new era of fidelity for the Vandervoorts, for sure.

The Vandervoorts also got together for a little photo session a few weeks ago. Take a look at them! This is what people look like when they are standing on the cusp of unlimited fame and $$$.

DON'T THINK ABOUT VANDERVOORTS

Hey it's time to check in with The Vandervoorts and see what's happening!

You know that thing where someone says "Don't think about elephants" and then all you can do is think about elephants? I'm kind of like that with The Vandervoorts. Sometimes I'm trying to get to sleep and my brain is going 1,000 MPH around and around wondering what each of The Vandervoorts is up to at that very moment, so I say to myself "Don't think about The Vandervoorts!" But then I think, "Hey, that's just like that 'Don't think about elephants' thing!" And then my brain starts zipping around with all kinds of ideas about elephants. It's hard to be me!

But hey, let's talk about The Vandervoorts. First of all, even though we haven't heard much from the band lately, I assure that they are not bears and they do not hibernate. So that means they've been up to things lately and are making plans for the future. For example, Mark Vandervoort is back to blogging! He says he was worried about having nothing to write about. But of course, that's something to write about right there! I hope he writes about Vandervoorts practice soon. That's something I know we'd all like to hear more about.

Here's another item. The Vandervoorts are getting their picture taken in Chinatown NYC this weekend. It's for some kind of website thing, and I don't know if they have to take their clothes off or not. A few weeks after I find out, I'll post the details here!

Did you know Mark V and Dorothy V got married last year? I kind of dropped the ball on that one. I'll see if I can find a picture and post it up here for y'all.

And Yung-En V (aka Master Chen, aka Mister Chen) has been selling t-shirts like like they are coming into style.

What's new with Emma V? Beats me! She doesn't have a website so it's hard to dig up dirt on her.

It was one year ago tonight that the Vandervoorts performed at Great Lakes with a robot. Think about everything that's happened since then:

The bartender that booked The Vandervoorts left Great Lakes

And then he opened his own bar

We had that whole presidential election hee-haw

The Vandervoorts continued to turn out hot numbers like some kind of erupting numerical volcano

365 more days under the belt!

Also, I don't think anyone has seen Calcutron since that night. I wonder what he's been up to?

I suspect by this time next year The Vandervoorts will have a song on at least one WB show soundtrack!

One more thing. I was reading through some old posts from this blog earlier today. And we used to have a lot of fun here, with the trivia and the gossip and all. Hopefully we can bring some of that back. Not today though, I've got a bitch of a cold.

I was "thinking" that the cool thing about the Vandervoorts' name is that is has two V's in it. Two V's looks a lot like a W. See: VV or vv. Remember how when Weezer was popular everyone would write the W with wings, sort of like this: =W= Well we can do the same thing for the Vandervoorts! =VV= And if you are at the show you can throw your hands up in the air and make little V's with your fingers! I won't be doing this but maybe you should, you know, to show the band how much you love them. They already know how much I love them because I maintain a whole freaking blog about them. If you make little V's with your fingers they will appreciate that. They will appreciate it even more if you are actually at the show while you are doing it, instead of at home, watching Ice Wars 2004: USA vs. The World. It's hard to think of something sadder than someone sitting at home, watching Ice Wars for two whole hours, waving their hands up in the air and making little V's with their fingers.

Ok, I realize I'm a little late getting back to you with the Vandervoorts Trivia Question answer. You'll get no lame excuses from me!

So...the answer to "yesterday's" Vandervoorts Trivia Question is...

SIRIUS!

That's right, if the Vandervoort's were a star, they would be Sirius!

Here are some facts about Sirius:

It is the brightest star in the night sky!

It is twice as massive as our sun!

It can be seen from every inhabited region of the world!

It is 8.6 light years away! That's very close, in terms of stars!

It is also known as the Dog Star! W00f! (The dog belongs to Orion!)

It is a binary star! Its companion star is called Sirius B, or the Pup! The Pup is a white dwarf star! (If the Little Kingz were a star...)

By now it should be obvious that there are many reasons that the Vandervoorts would be Sirius if they were a star. The final reason why the Vandervoorts would be Sirius if they were a star?

This is only slightly related to the VANDERVOORTS, but it's Friday, Mark Vandervoort has fled the country, and Pucci is busy evicting Dorothy and Yung-En Vandervoort. So music isn't on anyone's mind these days, and our thoughts turn to...

Liquor! And more importantly, those who serve it to us. An exclusive What's Up VANDERVOORTS investigation has revealed that Ray Gish, Brooklyn's favorite bartender and friend of the VANDERVOORTS when they played at Great Lakes twice, is opening a bar on Brooklyn's burgeoning (and not so semi-grungy anymore) 5th Avenue! The bar will be called Commonwealth and is mostly made of wood. That's about all we know -- the bar is ultra close to the OTB which should see a little extra business when Ray throws his annual Kentucky Derby Party next year.

LIVE FROM LIT

The lady takes my money and asks me, "What band are you here to see?" "The VANDERVOORTS," I squeak. "Who?" "The VANDERVOORTS?" "Oh, ok."

The VANDERVOORTS are sitting together on a sofa. They are so cute together in their striped polos.

The basement is dank. It has a catacomb look to it. There is a band. The VANDERVOORTS go on next.

There is some confusion over by the open bar.

Rock and roll. Repeatedly.

"Gowanus Twist" - in a year or two the city will be replacing the one "jet propeller" with three "jet propellers". Will the VANDERVOORTS update the song? Probably not.

New song: Brigham Young and Bob Jones are Getting Married (In Heaven). Take that, FMA! Barney Frank is sleeping well tonight. (Now that would be a good title for a song!)

Emma introduces B61 by saying it is a song about a bus. This is the kind of penetrating inter-song patter that fans like me love to hear at concerts.

Lots of people are here now. About fifty. Some of them are smoking, which is -- gasp -- illegal.

Mark steps on something that turns off Dorothy's guitar and Emma makes a clever ad lib.

Bombs! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! When Emma screams people smile. Beautiful.

Two people are cutting it up in front of the stage.

Finale: Dwight D, Dwight D Eisenhower! Dwight D, Dwight D Eisenhower! Dwight D, Dwight D Eisenhower!

Assorted mingling. Incredibly, the VANDERVOORTS get paid. They blow the money on smokes and swill because that's just how hard they are.

Overall I give this show THREE out of FOUR VANDERVOORTS.

PUCCI

I have a lot of behind-the-scenes info on the Vandervoorts that I can share with you. For example, they practice in an apartment in Brooklyn. The neighbors must be very considerate, or deaf. Maybe they realize what sort of ground-breaking experiment in acoustical magnificance is going on next door.

The apartment is owned by a cat named Pucci. When the Vandervoorts go on tour, Pucci has already volunteered to drive the van.

The Vandervoorts also know someone named Big Pucci, but he isn't a cat, and he doesn't live in New York. He is still a big fan though.

Medium-sized Pucci is actually taller than Big Pucci, and he lives in Minnesota.

There is no Little Pucci. Yet.

NO UPDATES TODAY

Having trouble getting Vandervoorts news today...out on a bender all weekend...my AP wire printer got jammed up on the Reagan obits before the Vandervoorts gossip came over. All I really remember about the man is that he was a great comfort after the Challenger ker-ploded. Hey, wouldn't it be cool if the Vandervoorts did a song about outer space? That would be awesome! There are a lot of good songs about space already, but I'm sure the Vandervoorts can find room for one more.

PRIVATE DANCER

So there was this "wedding" a month or so ago which I might fill you in on later. As part of the ceremony, Mark Vandervoort sang the Tina Turner song "Private Dancer," and it was awesome! He got his voice all up high, like way up high...it was like his voice was all up high on a ladder and it said, "Mark is this high enough?" and Mark said to his voice, "No bitch, get higher!" so the voice climbed up a few more rungs and said, "Ok Mark I'm scared of heights is this high enough now?" and Mark said, "A few more! Keep going until I tell you to stop" and his voice kind of gave him this sheepish look, like it was saying, "Ok Mark I don't want to but I trust you so I'll try" and so on and so forth until everyone standing around was like, "Damn, that's high."

The important part is that I heard the Vandervoorts had been trying to practice the song but sort of gave it up. Maybe if you email them they will reconsider.

After a December hiatus, Mark Vandervoort is back to blogging.

Dorothy Vandervoort bought a new guitar. When asked to comment on what makes the new guitar better she reportedly said, "It works." Unsure at this time if the guitar is pink and/or inflatable.

Mark Vandervoort might have bought a fish.

Unlike November, January is a month that knocks on your door and asks questions (November just paces around at your front door until you let it in, April runs around naked outside your back window, August is a fat uncle sitting on your couch who won't leave, etc. etc. etc.). January wants to know: "Vandervoorts, how can you rock any harder this year without causing an earthquake??? I think it would be impossible!"

January is a weird month. Enjoy it.

LITTERBOX ROBOT

Monday's show promises to be the most exciting Vandervoorts show yet. Not only will the evening be hosted by a robot, but The Vandervoorts will share the stage with Litterboxx, a kitty punk rock band that may or may not feature some members of The Vandervoorts! (A band called Logjam will also be playing -- I am trying to get the dirt on them so standby...)

Now, a few facts about litterboxes.

This is a litterbox robot. Calcutron is not related to this robot! Calcutron was made to calculate (although he has many other talents). Litterbox robots are pretty much the worst kind of robot to be because cats crawl inside you to do their business.

Did you know that Charles Mingus taught his cat how to use the toilet? It's true, he even wrote a clever pamphlet he called a "CAT-alog" about the whole process! What a genius.

And if William Safire wrote about litter, he might say:

1779 had the oldest earthquake published about in modern Newsday. On February 2nd, a 3.5 rumble shook northern New Jersey and Long Island. It was centered in Cheesequake State Park, NJ. No injuries or damage was reported. (Brasley 1979)

The name Van der Voort literally means "of the ford" (a ford being a place where a road crosses through shallow water in a riverbed). The name is not uncommon, and there appear to be a number of different families with this surname who are unrelated.
